“Dr. Abigale Mitchell is an expert on the Hope Diamond and in charge of a gala featuring the cursed stone in order to bring in donations tothe Smithsonian of which she is a curator.  Only Abby is also on the trail of thieves who steal art from around the world.  It angers her that they struck at a museum just after warning the museaum director of the possibility.  She is even more furious because the took the one token she has of her father’s love… a very distinctive ring.  Abby may have lost the ring, but she has gained a suitor.. or has she?  When she is given the idea to actually wear the most guarded diamond in the world at the gala, security is not happy.  They are even less happy when plans go awry and Abby discovers tht those on whom she most depended have feet of clay.  Can she make things right before she loses everything she values most?  An interesting and informative mystery (with chapters inserted on the history of the Hope Diamond’s cursed owners)  with some very nice twists and heroine who proves anything but helpess.” ~ Carolyn R. “The Hope Diamond seems to put a curse on those who come in contact with it.  They are robbed of their ability to enjoy a contented life, although some of them may have brought the curse upon themselves.  The author did much detailed research on the Hope Diamond from the time it was discovered in India in 1653 and has woven its history into the fictional part of the book.  Through hundreds of years the Diamond was owned by three persons before it found its way to the Smithsonian in Washington DC.  At the death of one of its owners, the diamond had to be pried from her hand because she had become so obsessed with it. The Hope Diamond continues its hold and curse on people after it is placed in the Smithsonian.  The main character in the book is Dr. Abigail Mitchell who works for the Smithsonian and she has become obsessed with the Diamond, visiting the room where it is displayed at least daily for two years.  Art thieves and buyers of stolen art are also interested in the Diamond. Although Abby has not entered a church since becoming an adult, she feels a longing for something that is missing in her life when she sees a church whether it is a picture or from a moving vehicle.  In the end, finding she could forgive her fater for not loving her, she surrenders to the pull from within while standing in the sanctuary of a church in Cape Town South Africa.  With tears on her cheeks, she talks to God saying ‘I’ve been running too long.’The discussion questions listed at the back of the book will encourage a book group to share their thoughts and participate fully in the discussion of the book. eye of the god, a book that the reader will not want to put down until the last word is read.” ~ Shirley Vaughn & Carol Powers Librarians Good Shephered United Methodist Church
